Last week, thousands of volunteers spread out across the 4,000 square miles of Los Angeles County to conduct the 2024 Homeless Count. Traveling in small groups, volunteers tallied the number of unsheltered individuals, tents, vehicles, and make-shift shelters in each census tract.
Government agencies, including the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), use the data collected during the Homeless Count to develop strategies to address homelessness and determine where funding and resources will do the most good.
The 2024 Count began in the San Fernando Valley, with Mayor Karen Bass, Council President Paul Krekorian, Councilmember Nithya Raman and and County Supervisors Lindsay Horvath and Kathryn Barger all taking part. LAHSA will take several months to compile and analyze the data. Findings will be made public in Spring 2024.
