This summer saw the 75th anniversary of President Truman’s Executive Order 9981, integrating the armed forces of the United States.  To mark the occasion, the City Council proclaimed Buffalo Soldiers Day, named for the legendary African American cavalry units of the 19th century. The Council welcomed the New Buffalo Soldiers and the Nogales Buffalo Soldiers Legacy Association to join in the observance. These volunteers perform living history and inform the public of the role of the Buffalo Soldiers in the history of the American West, and by extension, the contribution of African Americans to the defense and security of the United States throughout our history.
