Council Seeks Speed Humps for Every School

Posted on 05/10/2023

LOS ANGELES (May 10, 2023) - Today, the City Council approved a motion by Council President Paul Krekorian calling on the Department of Transportation to prepare a plan for  installing speed humps at all public schools in the city.

This program would be similar to the pilot program already underway in the Council President’s own District 2.  Speed humps are being installed at public elementary schools throughout District 2 (including North Hollywood and surrounding areas) over the summer, and will be in place at every public elementary school in the district by the start of the 2023-24 school year.

These raised sections of asphalt, designed to slow traffic and heighten driver awareness, are being placed adjacent to schools at locations chosen in consultation with each school’s principal.

Under the City’s existing program, speed humps are only installed on an annual cycle. Groups and individuals are invited to apply, but the cycle closes when a total of 375 applications are received. This application threshold is typically met within minutes of the cycle opening.

Earlier this year, Council President Krekorian allocated district-specific funds to implement a dedicated elementary school speed hump program in District 2.  He has requested funding in this year’s budget to extend this program to the entire city.
