In the latest meting of the Ad Hoc Committee on City Governance Reform, chaired by Council President Krekorian, academic experts and advocates from the LA Governance Reform Project, Our LA, and Common Cause shared their detailed recommendations on optimal City Council size and the process of selecting commissioners to redraw district lines after each census. Members of the public and community groups also weighed in during a robust public comment period. Although the plans presented differed in details, a rough consensus is now emerging over Council size and commissioner selection process. The Committee’s next meeting will be on August 28, when the Chief Legislative Analyst will address the Committee members’ remaining questions before drafting the necessary amendments to the City Charter. The proposed Charter amendments will appear on the 2024 election ballot and can only take effect if they are approved by the voters.
