Long-Sought New Dog Park Opens at Whitnall Highway

Posted on 10/17/2022

After six years of effort, what was once a barren strip of dirt with a chain-link fence is now a beautiful playground for the dogs of North Hollywood and surrounding areas.  The newly renovated Whitnall Highway Off-Leash Dog Park is divided into separate areas for large and small dogs, resurfaced with decomposed granite and turf in large central open spaces.  The park includes new shaded seating areas, drinking fountains, new fencing and landscaping, agility equipment, and even public dog art!

Councilmember Paul Krekorian had fought for years to fund and implement the project, overcoming tremendous challenges in coordinating the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), which owns the property, and the Department of Recreation and Parks, which administers the site.

The neighborhood celebrated the completion of the renovation with a Pet Resource Fair. The L.A. Animal Services Department was on hand to share information on pet licensing, spaying and neutering services, and animal health and nutrition.  Animal Services also brought a number of amiable shelter dogs available for adoption.
