New Rail Service is Coming to the East San Fernando Valley

Posted on 01/04/2023

For a decade, Councilmember Krekorian has been leading the fight to bring light rail transit to the San Fernando Valley – the kind of transportation that Valley residents have not had since the old Red Cars were scrapped over 70 years ago.  In 2022, that goal moved dramatically forward as Metro secured state and federal funding for the East San Fernando Valley Light Rail project. The Valley’s first new rail line in decades, it will link the neighborhoods of Pacoima, Arleta, Mission Hills, Panorama City, Van Nuys and Valley Glen to existing Metro, Metrolink and Amtrak lines, connecting these communities to local, regional and national rail service.

“In the 1930s, my mother could travel all over the Valley and beyond on the Red Cars,” said Councilmember Krekorian. “Since then the Valley became almost entirely car-centric, but now we are finally doing the vital work of building an efficient and convenient transit system that will revitalize the East Valley and enhance mobility for generations to come.”
